Left Zeebrugge and headed across country to
the new tunnel at Terneuzen and across the bridges of Zeeland. All the traffic
was heading for the beaches, while we headed inland to Het Dijke. Waited
at this swing bridge in baking heat for 30 minutes while it let sailing
boats through one way then the other.
While heading across country to avoid the busy
motorways we found our 1st windmill, worth 10 points in the I spotted it
first game (50 if moving). There used to be 10,000 windmills in Holland,
now there are barely a 1000 with only 200 still working.
Het Dijke motorcycle only campsite can be very
quiet in the middle of August. It is a good base to tour the local area
with Arnheim, Hoge Veluwe National park and the local dyke roads all worth
a visit.
We recommend the dyke roads, they are well surfaced,
quiet and have great views as you ride higher than the multi coloured houses
on one side with Rhine barges on the other.
Apenheul primate nature park (http://www.apenheul.nl/)
is a good day out where you can watch (or is it the other way round) over
30 species of primate. Some of the monkeys are free to run around you. They
are very good pick pockets, which is why you are given free lockers and
a monkey proof bag to carry your things in. Parking is free for motorbikes
just use the cycle park at the entrance.
Gave up on visiting Amsterdam due to the 40°C
heat and the campsite looking like a youth hostel with police cars cruising
around the site! plus every available post informing you to lock up all
your valuables, not easy in a tent. We looked on the map and rode to a campsite
at Uitdam on the banks of the Ijsselmeer, for a cooling swim with ducks.
Cross- stitching at Volendam a picturesque seafront
village complete with harbour and multi-flavoured ice-cream.
Crossing the Afsluildik (enclosing dam) which
links Noord Holland and Friesland. This amazing piece of engineering built
between 1927 and 1932 is 18 ½ miles long and turned the Zuiderzee
into an inland lake. Four miles along is a café, lookout tower and
a monument marking the point at which the dyke was finally closed
Multi-national cooking at the quiet well sheltered
Blue Star motocamp in Groningen. Unfortunately this site is now closed.
Well worth a visit Bourtange is a restored star
shaped fortress on the border of Germany. It is closed to car traffic but
motorbikes can park in the village and avoid the walk from the visitor centre.
Bikers Farm in Germany is a good place to stay.
It is also a meeting place for bikers with an outside café and bar.
The sofa at Camping in Den Hof, South Limburg
is a great place to chill out when the rain arrives.
The large open field at Toerstop motocamp gets
busy at weekends and is another good spot to tour the local area or relax
by the pool or bar.
You don’t have to cross the Atlantic to
ride across America in fact its close to Toerstop Motocamp
Rounded the holiday off with a bike rally. The
biker meets triker rally is apparently held in a different spot every year.
This year it was held in Barneveld at a motorcycle clubhouse in the middle
of an industrial estate. Although the camping area was like a ploughed field
the friendly atmosphere and clubhouse more than made up for it.
Chilling on the sofa at the Biker meets Triker
rally our last night before the long ride home
