Bokki camping - 2003
Last year a few of us went down to the Stella Alpine Rally, well when we were down there we camped at a very bike friendly site just over the Italian border - Bokki camping.
A bit of a way out of the little Alpine town of Bardonecchia - approx 30 mins walk from the site. The site is high up in the Alps and not far from Val D'isere and within 10 minutes ride of the Telegraph and Colle D' golibier passes - attached picture. The site is a mixture of Caravans, motorhomes and static caravans. In the centre of the site is a large log cabin comprising a bar/cafe, telephone, internet link upstairs and good clean showers, toilets, washing machines and drying facilities underneath. The owners are very friendly - when we were there last year they gave us their personal mobile when they found out we were heading in to an area of Italy they had family in so that if we got lost they could help. When we were there during the rally there were Brits, Germans, Italians, Poles, Austrians and Norwegians (the Brits and the Germans drank every one under the table). The cafe does simple meals (Pizza, steaks) for reasonable prices. But the best part of the site for me was sitting on the steps of the cabin in the morning alpine mist with a hot fresh apple croissant in one hand and a large latte in the other.

The down side of the site is that it is a little way out of the town. The town has a small super market, plenty of small shops, bars and hotels. It is located on the Italian side of the Frejus tunnel and finding the exit off the main road is not easy. When you ride in to the town the first impression you get is that you are riding in to war torn Russia with large grey concrete buildings as far as the eye can see but find the centre and look for the road that heads off under a bridge, it leads to the camp site. As you look around the town the grey concrete is replaced with large expensive ski cabins.
The town has a petrol station but beware it is not open on a Sunday and out of hours it is prepay at the pumps using a machine - but none of us could get it working. However, if you get back on to the main road and head towards the Frejus tunnel there is a service centre just before you enter the tunnel - but be careful where you park.
The only other piece of advice I'd give is beware of Italian drivers - set your self up for a corner and when you look in the blind spot there will be a Fiat sitting there, and the Italians drive like lunatics, and they know the roads. Coming down out of the Alps on a very tight twisty road I had an Uno on my arse for nearly 20 miles, the best way to deal with them is to ignore them.
And we are heading back......... we are not sure yet if it will be back to Italy or down to Andorra.............
Cheers Andy
